Clothing and lifestyle.

• The Tuareg people have a men’s practice of veiling their faces with blue cloth, dyed with indigo. The veil usually conceals their face, excluding their eyes and the top of the nose.
•     The blue men of the Sahara – The Tuareg. They principally inhabit a vast area in the Sahara desert, in Morocco. They live also in Saharan and Sahelian Africa mostly in northern Niger, eastern Mali, western Libya, northeastern Burkina Faso.
•     The Tuareg are Berber people with a traditionally nomadic pastoral lifestyle. A 1984 census indicated there were as little as 4500 Twareg Berbers living in Morocco. The Total Tuareg population is about 1 million.
•     The veil that Tuareg men wear on their faces has several meanings. It’s, first of all, a symbol of male identity. Common to their belief, it also protects the wearer from evils spirits. And to express respect in the presence of chiefs, older persons and in-laws. It may have related instrumentally from the need for protection from the harsh desert sands as well. This tradition is firmly established.

Food and origins.

•     The Tuareg speak a Berber language, Tamasheq. The term Berber was first used centuries ago by foreigners. It’s a variation of the Greek word ‘Barbaros’ (barbarian). Interestingly, the term was used to describe anyone who didn’t speak Greek. Greeks did not use this to offend the Berbers. However, unlike the modern day term, it’s used to describe an uncivilized group of people.
•     The Tuareg are an Islamic African people that combined with traditional beliefs and practices.
