Atlas MountainsDay trips in Morocco are a fantastic way to see Morocco and explore the culture without spending too much time in the bustling city of Medina. The Atlas Mountain day trip from Marrakech is one of the most popular day trips to explore the nature of the Agafay desert, enjoy the mountainous views and a camel ride in the dunes, explore Berber village beauty and culture and a long walk in Toubkal National Park. Throughout your trip, you’ll be able to witness stunning vistas that take in the snow-capped Toubkal Mountains and lush valleys.
This is a great day trip from Marrakech that starts with a tour of the great city and ends with a visit to the Atlas mountains. You'll be picked up in a 4WD and driven out of the city. The drive through the Haouz plains and Agafay desert is isolated despite being close to the city. From there continue to the lake of Lalla Takerkoust, where you can stop to enjoy the sceneries and take some snaps during the trek. The next 30-minute camel ride is mesmerizing and the next stop will be at the slope of the Atlas Mountains which will do nothing to numb the beauty of the place. The typical Berber villages with their orange roofs and the Berber women with their colorful dresses scattered left and right in the villages, give an added charm to the whole experience.
Berber hospitality is a thing of legend. When you visit a little village in the Fadma a generous lady will invite you in and serve you a cup of tea. She will offer you some delicious homemade bread dipped in Olive oil. From there your journey stays continued through the rough landscape to Asni valley and then to Imlil valley.
When you arrive in Imlil you leave your 4x4 and start your hour-long walk to 'Aroumd', a small Berber village located at the heart of Toubkal National Park, also called the "Gateway to the High Atlas", famous for its marvelous views of Toubkal Mountain, the highest peak (4167) of North Africa. After lunch in Aroumd village don't miss visiting the little waterfall on the way to the village, where the water has a wonderful emerald green color, and then wander around the Berber village itself. After visiting Aroumd, the tourists descend to Imlil through a charming and comfortable ride to Tahennaout which is the main place in the town. The local markets are amazing and a weekly market is set up here every Tuesday.
There is roughly a distance of 65km that separate the two destinations. Imlil is frequently used as a base camp when attempting to climb the Atlas Mountains.
What type of clothes to wear is all dependent on the weather in the Atlas Mountains? If it’s late spring or early fall light clothes are a better option and if it is early spring or winter you must have some warm clothes.
When planning your trip to the Atlas Mountains, you should know that the best time to visit is spring and fall. If you are a ski fan, Oukaimeden is one of the top spots for winter sports. However, the Ourika Valley is a popular vacation spot for tourists of all ages. The people of Marrakech love to escape the summer heat and relax in the beautiful surroundings of the Ourika Valley.
In summer, the Atlas Mountains are a popular tourist attraction because of this cool temperature. However, the temperature can reach 30 °C in the valleys. Thunderstorms occur often in the valleys. However, thunderstorms are occasional in the Atlas Mountains. In winter the temperature can reach a very low level due to heavy snow. The Toubkal summit (4167 m) one of the highest mountains is mostly covered in snow from November to May. During the day time temperature is moderate from 10°C to 20°C. The spring season in Atlas Mountain is mostly wet due to snow meltdown and rain. Even though the possibility of a flood is still possible, this is an excellent occasion for visitors and trekking fans to enjoy the Atlas Mountains. The Fall season (September and October) is an excellent opportunity to hike at a low cost in the Atlas Mountains because of the mild temperature and dry weather.
The Atlas Mountains are also home to several international ski resorts and trekking and hiking trails. The trails are also well marked and well stocked with fresh water, offering a safe and fun experience and an opportunity to visit Berber communities.
